Book description – As much as Americans love the finer things, 90% of the wines bought in America are popular big brands that cost less than $15 a bottle—yet no one has ever compared them, until now. In Good, Better, Best Wines, a new book launched this week, wine expert Carolyn Evans Hammond ranks the most popular big brand wines by grape variety and price point, up to $15 per bottle. This book is particularly timely given America is drinking more wine than ever and is poised to become the world’s biggest wine consumer by 2012 according to The International Wine and Spirit Record.
In Good, Better, Best Wines readers will find:
- The good, better and best big name wines under $5, $8, $11 and $15, for each major grape variety
- Hundreds of bottle images, for easy recognition on the shelf
- Jargon-free tasting notes
- Perfect party wine recommendations for specific occasions
- Trade secrets for getting the most out of each bottle
And because Good, Better, Best Wines focuses on the best-selling wines in the United States—think names like Beringer, Barefoot, Kendall-Jackson and Woodbridge—they’ll be stocked at the local store. These are the most widely available wines in America.
I know nothing about wine. I’ve tried some and know which of them I did and didn’t like. That is all I know about wine. I’m not a big drinker by any means but do enjoy the occasional drink. It’s also nice to bring a bottle to someone’s house at times. Now I can walk into the liquor store without the fear of knowing that I will stand there for a half hour wondering what tastes good and what tastes like what.
The book is pocket sizes, so you could keep it in your purse when you go shopping. The book is broken down into several categories:
- Wine Basics
- White Wines
- Red Wines
- Rose and Sparkling Wines
- Bargain Wines, Dessert Wines and Party Wines
Each of the categories is further broken down into the types of that wine. For instance, White Wines is broken down into White Blends, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blan/Fume Blanc, Riesling and Other Great Whites. Each section within a category contains a comparson of three wines in each price category. Each comparison contains a detailed description of the wine with picture and includes flavor, alcohol percentage and where it was made. The entire book is written in easy to understand wording. The Wine Basics chapter is helpful and informative, not only explaining how the book works but also things like caps, aging and storage. Myths, facts, trivia, nutritional information and other bits of knowledge are scattered throughout the book.
This book would make a great housewarming gift, as well as a great gift for wine lovers and novices alike.
